Projects
Fountain Creek is an ever changing waterway whose course naturally shifts - sometimes quite drastically - over time.
As the water flows, it carries sediment that can erode the stream banks. This erosion can pose risks to human-built structures, wash away valuable farmland, and diminish the vibrant habitats of wildlife. Building projects along this unpredictable creek require careful planning and innovative solutions to protect both the environment and the community.
As the human population in the watershed grows so does Fountain Creek. Most of our water comes from outside of the watershed, but it is eventually deposited into the creek. This can increase flow speed, and therefore erosion, which has made creek restoration projects increasingly necessary over time.
Since inception, FCWD has invested almost $35 million in creek restoration projects. This amount includes 20+ studies and plans and 13 completed projects.
Completed projects have been concentrated to Fountain Creek south of Colorado Springs due to funding limitations. Creek restoration on Fountain Creek has prevented over 150,000 tons of erosion and sedimentation from entering our waterways, established acres of wetland habitats on its banks, and improved water quality.
