February 2025 Project Update

Eagleridge Project construction is underway, beginning in Fall 2024. FCWD hired Holcim as the construction contractor for this large project in Pueblo County. FCWD’s Monetary Mitigation Funds are being used to fund the work. After working extensively with the Pueblo Police Department, the site was cleared of unhoused encampments and Holcim was given the green light to move forward on construction. Work began on the south end where it will tie in with FCWD’s Highway 47 restoration project that was damaged in the high water events of 2023. Fountain Creek has been temporarily re-routed to the east allowing Holcim to construct the west portion of the project site. Once this is done, the creek will be redirected again to facilitate the construction of the east banks and structures.

The Highway 47 repair and tie-in entails 2,400 feet of channel work. Approximately 25 percent of the soil riprap is installed and 40 percent of excavation and fill is completed. Phase One work - consisting of the removal of an abandoned waterline and the bollards protecting the abandoned line - are complete. The installation of the two riffle structures has begun. These riffle structures are used to hold an existing grade and slow the loss of sediment. We expect to have substantial completion of the project by the end of April.

Why Eagleridge?

Located in Pueblo, CO near Eagleridge and I-25, the Eagleridge Focus Area was evaluated in 2021 and 2022 and it was determined that removal of the waterline crossing bollards, stabilization of the channel and connection of the floodplain at the extension of the Highway 47 project should be designed and constructed. The planning and design of the project progressed during 2022 and the project was scheduled for construction in Fall 2023. Unfortunately, due to heavy rains in Spring 2023 and resulting issues, the design needed modifications and the project start was rescheduled for Fall 2024.

Colorado College Eagleridge Storyboard

In the Spring of 2024, FCWD partnered with a Colorado College Landscape Processes and Evaluation class and their professor Dr. Sarah Schanz. FCWD Executive Director Alli Schuch provided an introduction to FCWD, its work, and an overview of the Fountain Creek Watershed. Students spent time in the field observing and measuring some of FCWD's projects and developed three storyboards. These storyboards provide an overview and evaluation of FCWD's work around erosion control, the erratic nature of the creek, and thoughts on future projects.
